Biography
Nikolai Ivashintsov was born on April 19, 1819 in the city of St. Petersburg, came from noblemen of the Buysky district of the Kostroma province . The son of Lieutenant Alexei Gerasimovich Ivashintsov and Anna Dorofeevna, nee Zhadovskaya .
He was educated in the Naval Cadet Corps and in the officer class, on January 30, 1836 he was left at the corps as a teacher of marine and mathematical sciences, in 1837 he was promoted to midshipman [3] .
In 1846-1847 he was the commander of the ship “Courageous”. Ivashintsov, seconded in 1848 to the Hydrographic Department of the Maritime Ministry under the direction of the famous hydrograph Reinecke , participated in the survey of the Baltic Sea annually until 1853 and edited the Sea Months, which was then published by the Hydrographic Department.
On March 22, 1853, with the rank of captain-lieutenant, he was sent to the disposal of the Orenburg Governor-General V. A. Perovsky , participated in the assault on the Kokand fortress Ak-Mosque and received the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with a bow, in 1855 he was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree with the imperial crown. Since 1856, he began exploration of the Caspian Sea , as the head of an expedition that lasted 15 years, made astronomical and magnetic observations at many points of the sea, investigated the topography of the bottom, and mapped the coastline. On September 13, 1857 he was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank, on April 17, 1860 he received the rank of captain of the 1st rank, on April 23, 1862 he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree with swords.
From August 8 to August 28, 1866 he participated in sailing along the Volga River with Sovereign Heir Tsesarevich and Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich (future Alexander III ) and Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich from St. Petersburg , through Tver along the Volga: from Tver to Kazan and the mouth of the Kama and back through Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow and St. Petersburg.
In 1866, Ivashintsov was elected a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences [4] . In 1867 he was appointed a member of the training department of the Marine Technical Committee. In 1869 he was promoted to rear admiral. He was a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and in 1864 he was awarded the Constantine Prize from him for his work.
He was married to Teresa (-Renate) Egorovna Hessen (November 10, 1839, St. Petersburg - February 19, 1879, Sevastopol), daughter of Fleet Lieutenant General Yegor Fedorovich Hessen and Elizaveta Romanovna (Reingoldovna) von Shelting.
Nikolai Alekseevich Ivashintsov died of fever exacerbation, January 13 ( 25 ), 1871 , in his hometown and was buried in the Smolensky Orthodox cemetery .

In 1864 he was awarded a prize and a gold medal named after the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich from the Imperial Russian Geographical Society .
On April 11, 1866 he was awarded the Highest Benevolence "for the performance of hydrographic work in 1865."
