Thonmi Sambhota ( Tib. ཐོན་ མི་ སམྦྷོ་ ཊ ། , 7th century) is a Tibetan leader, whose name is traditionally associated with the creation of Tibetan writing and the beginning of translation activities in Tibet [1] . Presumably, he was the first minister at the court of Songtsen Gampo and regent after his death (c. 650) [2] .
Thonmi Sambhot's life is largely surrounded by legends. According to some sources, he was born in 619. Tonmi is the name of the Tibetan clan to which it belonged. The name Sambhot is Sanskrit and consists of two parts: “sam” - “scientist”, and “bhota” - “Tibet” [3] .
Emperor Songtsen Gampo drew attention to the developed intelligence of Thonmi when he was still at an early age. In 633, he was sent by a teenager along with other young people to India with the aim of studying the scriptures and creating Tibetan writing [3] . After returning, they created the Tibetan alphabet , grammar, translated Buddhist texts, laid the foundations of Tibetan Buddhism [2] . Sambhota together with one of the learned Indians translated 21 sutras from Sanskrit into Tibetan [1] .
