Abul-Qasim Muhammad ibn Haukal en-Nisibi , known as Ibn Haukal ( Arabic ابن حوقل ) - Arabian geographer and traveler of the X century , originally from Baghdad . He traveled for over 30 years to different countries, his “ Book of ways and countries ” (“Kitab al-Masalik va-l-mamalik”) [1] contains numerous information on the history and toponymy of the Caliphate and surrounding countries.

Biography
Abul-Qasim Muhammad ibn Haukal en-Nisibi was born in the city of Nasib (Mesopotamia). Most of his life spent traveling. Completed the work of al-Istahri. In the work "Kitab al-masalik al-mamalik" ("Book of ways and countries") provides historical and ethnographic information about the Oghuz, Karluk, Kimiq, Kyrgyz, Toguz-Oghuz, Khazars; the places of their settlement are described, the routes of the Great Silk Road and other trade routes are indicated. There are characteristics of the cities of Isfidjab , Taraz , Sauran , Sutkent, Farab , Keder , Shaukhar and others, the Caspian and Aral seas, pp. Itil and Syrdariya . The appendix contains geographical maps "Surat al-Ard" ("Face of the Earth"). The work was published by M. de Gué (1873) and Kramers (1938–39).
As a representative of several Arab states, he visited most of the then Islamic countries, including the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, where he talked with refugees from the Khazar Kaganate, who resettled here after the defeat of their state by the troops of Prince Svyatoslav Igorevich of Kiev. This gave him the opportunity to gather information about the Rus , the Volga Bulgars, the Khazars and other peoples of Eastern Europe. The collected materials were included in his “Book of ways and countries” (960–970s). Ibn-Haukal revised and supplemented the message of al-Balkhi and al-Istahri about the division of subjects of Russ into three groups (Kuyab, Al-Slavia, al- Arsania) and about their trade relations with Khazaria, Itil Bulgaria and Byzantium. The work of Ibn Haukal is the earliest source, which mentions the eastern march of Prince Svyatoslav Igorevich of Kiev.
