- Spring - Pechenegs approach Hariopol. Seljuks take possession of many cities in Asia. Near Russia, the Pechenegs are smashing the army of Alexei Komnin , who is retreating, collecting soldiers and defeating the Pechenegs the next day. The Pechenegs besiege Komnin in Tsurul. The Romans make a sortie and smash the Pechenegs. The Pechenegs depart to the Bulgarofig, Komnin returns to the capital.
- In the Song Empire , Chinese author Kin Guang writes Kang Shu (a book on sericulture ), which describes a silk-processing machine, later known as a belt drive .
- Adherents of Ismaili Hassan ibn al-Sabbah cunningly occupy the fortress of Alamut to the north-east of Qazvin . Hassan himself enters the fortress on September 4.
