Report
The race was the first for Ferrari, held without team leader Michael Schumacher. seriously injured at the British Grand Prix. He was replaced by Mika Salo. Mika Hakkinen came to the stage as the leader of the championship with an impressive margin. His closest pursuer was Eddie Irvine, who became the new leader of Ferrari.
Qualification
The first two places were confidently occupied by McLaren racers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Irvine became the third.
Race
On the first lap in the Remus turn, Coulthard attacked Hakkinen, knocked him off the track and took the lead. Hakkinen rolled back to twentieth place, but was able to continue the fight, throughout the race broke through the field and by the fiftieth circle was able to reach third place.
Mika Salo in the first round damaged the front wing, made a pit stop and could not participate in the fight for high places.
Coulthard confidently led to the middle of the race, losing the lead to Irvine during the pit stop - the Irish Ferrari was tucked into more circles. While Coulthard drove a heavy car after refueling, Irvine in a light car made a series of several fast laps. Winning 1.2-1.5 seconds per lap, he created the necessary separation from the Scotsman and after his pit stop he returned to the track as the leader. Coulthard caught up with Irvine and for the rest of the race actively attacked him in the struggle for leadership. Irvine managed to repel the attack and finished first with a margin of 0.3 seconds. Finishing third, Hakkinen lost 22 seconds to the pair of winners.
