Bimmen

Bimmen is located in the far west of the city of Kleve, on the Rhine, directly on the border with the Netherlands. The border crossing from Germany to the Netherlands, which has now lost its significance, has long been located here.

According to archaeological research, Bimmen as a settlement was founded in the Roman period of history , but due to its location on the Rhine, it was partially displaced. In 891-892 Beeman is first mentioned in the annals of the monastery of Lorsch . In 1242, a priest who served in the church of Bimmen was mentioned. The modern church of St. Martin was built in the XV-XVI centuries. and during its construction, tuff blocks of the previous construction were used. In the Middle Ages and a little later, the settlement belonged to the administration of Duffel .

Being a small settlement, Bimmen has a pronounced agricultural specialization: intensive dairy cattle breeding with extensive grazing. Part of the area is used for crop production . Bimmen still has close economic ties with the neighboring Dutch settlement of Millingen .

In winter, Bimmen’s territory is a wintering place for wild geese arriving from Scandinavia and the northern territories of European Russia , therefore it is listed as a specially protected natural reserve . Directly on the Rhine, an international hydrological station operates, the task of which is to determine the quality of river water using observations of river mollusks. It was discovered in 1970 and since then a continuous series of biological observations has been carried out together with specialists from the Netherlands. In 1974, a branch was opened on the Dutch side in Lobich. 11 experts every hour examine 35 cubic meters of water by biological, chemical and physical methods.
