The garden settlement is one of the Moscow settlements. It existed in the 17th century .
The garden settlement was located in Moscow on the territory of the modern Basmanny district , between the current Myasnitskaya and Pokrovka streets, and was limited to the modern Boulevard and Garden rings . The Sloboda was inhabited by gardeners who delivered various fresh vegetables and fruits to the royal court, some of which were grown in “sodil” (greenhouses). Most in demand were cabbage, cucumbers and apples, in addition, carrots, onions, radishes, garlic, and beets were cultivated here. Even watermelons and melons were grown [1] . The development of the area was not dense due to the large array of vegetable gardens and gardens.
The garden settlement in the XVII century was one of the largest in Moscow and consisted of 174 yards (in 1638), by 1679 their number increased significantly (373 yards). The Sloboda was served by three parishes - the Chariton of the Confessor (center of the settlement), St. Nicholas in the Butchers and Three Saints . From the temple of Chariton Confessor , known since 1625, the names of the current Bolshoi and Maly Kharitonyevsky lanes came from. The temple, located at 12 Bolshoi Kharitonyevsky per., Was the only stone building in the settlement for a long time [2] . The Church of the Three Saints , mentioned since 1635, was rebuilt in 1680 as a stone [1] .
From the second half of the 17th century, the settlement was actively occupied by merchants, representatives of the higher clergy, Moscow nobility (the chambers of the boyar Volkov were preserved) [3] . The reason for this could be the nearby Myasnitskaya Street, which under Peter I served as the royal road. On it, the sovereign often traveled from the Kremlin to the German settlement .
In the XVIII-XIX centuries, the area of the former settlement was called Ogorodniki. In 1994, Stopani Lane, known until 1922 as Chudovsky, was renamed Ogorodnaya Sloboda Lane .
