Biography

Born on August 17 ( August 30 according to a new style) in 1906 in Rostov-on-Don in a family of Don Cossacks [1] .

Already studying at school, Ivan was engaged in drawing and painting with S.K. Gambartsumov . I had to moonlight as a loader, seller, draw up wall newspapers. He also worked in the amateur theater "Eldorado".

In 1925 he entered the Medical Institute, where he studied for one year, and in 1926-1928 he studied at the Rostov Art College. In 1926, in the regional newspaper Molot , his first cartoon, Collaboration of Classes, was published (on a miners' strike in England). Since that time, Semenov is regularly published in the newspaper and becomes its full-time employee.

In the fall of 1931 he moved to Moscow, where he first worked in the Agricultural State Healthcare Enterprise, redrawing technical illustrations. Since 1932 it was published in the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda . Since 1935 he worked in the editorial office of the magazine " Crocodile ". Since 1933 he was a member of the Moscow Union of Artists , a participant in the exhibition "Artists of the RSFSR for 15 years."

I. M. Semenov, a participant in the Great Patriotic War , was a correspondent for the Red Fleet naval newspaper. Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1941. He participated in breaking the blockade of Leningrad , in the liberation of Shlisselburg and other operations of the Northern Fleet. In 1946, he was discharged with the rank of captain-lieutenant [2] and continued to work in the Crocodile; His drawings were also published in the newspapers Pravda , Komsomolskaya Pravda , Pioneer Pravda , and others. Since the late 1940s, Semenov worked as an illustrator of books; he was especially famous for illustrations for books for children [3] . On his initiative, in 1956 the children's magazine " Funny Pictures " was created, in which the artist became the chief editor and worked in this position until 1972. In 1963, his personal exhibition was held in Moscow.

In 1955-1982 he lived in Moscow on Verkhnyaya Maslovka Street 3. Died in 1982 in Moscow. He was buried at the Semenovsky cemetery.
