Earl of Clanwilliam is an inherited title in the Irish Peer system . It was created in 1776 for John Mead, 1st Viscount Clanuilliam (1744-1800). The Mead family is descended from John Mead (1642–1707), who represented the University of Dublin and County Tipperary in the Irish House of Commons , and also served as prosecutor for the Duke James of York . In 1703, the title of Baronet from Ballintober in Cork County ( Baronetry of Ireland ) was created for him. His eldest son, Pierce Mead, 2nd Baronet (1693-1711), died unmarried at an early age, the title was inherited by his younger brother, Richard Mead, 3rd Baronet (1697-1744). He represented Kinsale in the Irish House of Commons.
He was succeeded by his son, John Mead, 4th Baronet (1744-1800). He represented Banacher in the Irish House of Commons . He married Theodosia , daughter and wealthy heiress of Robert Hawkins-Magill. Thanks to this marriage, Gill Hall in Gillford ( County Down ) became the property of the Mead family. In 1766, John Mead became a peer of Ireland, receiving the titles of Baron Gillford from Gillford in County Down and Viscount Clanuilliam in County Tipperary . In 1776, the title of Earl of Clanwilliam ( peersty of Ireland ) was created for him. His grandson, Richard Mead, 3rd Earl of Clanuillam (1795–1879), was a prominent diplomat . Lord Clanuilliam was the personal secretary and closest associate of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lord Castle , and also served as Permanent Deputy Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1822–1823) and Ambassador to Prussia (1823–1827). In 1828, the title of Baron Clanuilliam from Clanuilliam in the county of Tipperary ( peerity of the United Kingdom ) was created for him.
He was succeeded by his eldest son, Richard Mead, 4th Earl of Clanuillam (1832-1907), who rose to the rank of Fleet Admiral . His successor was the second son - Arthur Mead, 5th Earl of Clanuillam (1873-1953). His only son, John Charles Edmund Mead, 6th Earl of Clanwilliam (1914-1989), served as Lord Lieutenant of County Down from 1962 to 1979 . He had six daughters, but no sons. He was succeeded by his cousin , John Herbert Mead, 7th Earl of Clanwilliam (1919-2009). He was the second son of Admiral Sir Herbert Mead (1875-1964), the third son of the 4th Earl of Clanuillam.
As of 2014 , the title holder is his son, Patrick James Mead, 8th Earl of Clanuillam (born 1960 ), who succeeded his father in 2009 .
