Background
MTV News announced in April 2004 that Spears is planning a reality show to document her life behind the scenes during the European part of The Onyx Hotel Tour . [1] Selected under the name OnTourage , the footage from the six-week stage was compiled into a six-episode series, each episode of which was sold for approximately $ 1 million, "much more than most reality programs." [1] Spears was a narrator and filmed material about her dancers and cameramen. [1] The show was supposed to end before the summer of 2004. [1]
On June 8, during Spears filming the Outrageous clip in Manhattan , she fell and injured her left knee. [2] She was immediately taken to a local hospital and had arthroscopy performed the next day. Britney spent six weeks with a tight bandage and the next eight to twelve weeks of rehabilitation, which canceled all upcoming concerts. [2] As a result, OnTourage also fell into disrepair. [3]
In July of that year, Spears announced her engagement to American dancer Kevin Federline , whom she met three months earlier. Since Federline only broke off relations with actress Shar Jackson , who was pregnant with their second child, this engagement was the subject of close attention of the media . [4] They held the wedding ceremony on September 18, 2004, but officially married three weeks later on October 6 due to a delay in the settlement of the couple’s pre-wedding agreement. [5] In October 2004, the singer announced that she would take a career break to take care of her family. [6]
Creation
After the "fierce war," on April 5, 2005, it was announced that Spears had signed a contract with UPN to air a reality show about her relationship with Federline. The series, which was released in five episodes, opened the chronicle of the relationship “from the first courtship to the engagement and, ultimately, to the ceremony of marriage. [7] In a statement on the series Spears said:“ From the day I and Kevin met, there have been constant rumors and erroneous conjectures about our life together.I feel that last year, the tabloids have been chasing after my life, and I'm really glad to show my fans what really happened, better than all the stories that were misinterpreted by journalists in the past. As I mentioned above, now I'm collecting Subscribe to express my personal life through art. " [7]
Originally called Britney and Kevin: Can You Handle Our Truth? , before changing it to Britney and Kevin: Chaotic with the key phrase "Can You Handle Our Truth?" ( Rus. Can you accept our truth? ). [8] The main locations for OnTourage were used for Britney and Kevin: Chaotic . [3] According to Spears, the series helped to get to know each other better: “I didn't know Kevin so well, and when I pulled out my camera, I felt better. This is really strange, because at first it was stressful. We were so nervous when we were together. I was really shy, and when I took the camera in my hands, I felt that I could express more. ” [9]
Criticism Reviews
Britney and Kevin: Chaotic has been heavily criticized by critics. Taylor Caric of Flak Magazine found the series to “offend common sense and decency,” [8] commenting that “Britney’s ridiculous behavior in Chaotic confirms the obvious openness of her status as a“ celebrity product ”and“ the calculated nature of her success. ” [ 8] He also noted that music critics “will easily open the gateway to new and creative ways to discuss her failed attempts against sanity in pop culture.” [8] DVD Talk Aaron Beyrle viewed the series as “an absolute natural disaster,” writing: " Britney & Kevin: Chaotic is an absolutely watchable and terrible crash of the series. ” [10] Ed Gonzales, author of Slant Magazine , remarked:“ The extreme style of filming the show makes it especially difficult to look at - no more and no less - a totem for narcissism populist narcissism ” He stated that Spears' views expressed in the series suggest that she “believes that she is the one and only in the world.” [11]
Josh Walk of Entertainment Weekly felt that Britney and Kevin: Chaotic was Spears' career suicide on camcorder, commenting that "the truth is not only that it is tasteless, but also obsessed with itself to a dangerous degree." Walk also noted that “many overlapping things are shameful on this show, as are Britney herself, which I may not be able to understand.” [12] Variety's Laura Fryce took the series as “a visual attack from the camera’s disgusting camera angles, likely to upset even the most insensitive viewer.” [13] Haley Butler on the Jam portal ! gave the final episode a mixed review, saying that it was full of “heartbreaking moments” and “the only episode without Britney’s idiotic jokes, childish behavior and reasoning about life,” commenting that Spears and Federline’s wedding scenes “looked very emotional and touching.” Butler also became interested: “Do they think their show has reached its goal?” [fourteen]
