Although the presidency is primarily ceremonial, Richards criticized the rise in crime in Trinidad and Tobago. He was also well known for his involvement in the Carnival. He became the first President of the Republic who was not a lawyer. Richards was re-elected for a second five-year term as president on February 11, 2008 by an electoral college. He was the only candidate, and the electoral board met for only three minutes. In May 2009, Richards called on the nation to resign due to the appointment of the Trinidad and Tobago Integrity Commission, whose members resigned for various reasons during the week after being sworn in on May 1, 2009 , when Richards went on a three-week trip. vacation abroad. In a television appeal to the people on May 29, 2009, he said that he had not tarnished his identity, and therefore did not see any reason for his resignation. He remained in office until 2013, when he was succeeded as head of state by Anthony Carmona .
He died on January 8, 2018 at the age of 86.
