Kaarta (Kaarta) - a locality (also found the definition of a country ) in West Africa , is the southern mountainous part of the Sahara , suitable for the middle course of Senegal .
A few rivers have some water only during the rainy season. Only the eastern part of Kaarta has a favorable climate and is quite fertile. The surface of Kaarta is about 60,000 km², the population is about 300,000 people (at the beginning of the 20th century ).
Originally, the country was owned by the Hasonka ; they were conquered by Bambara (both of them from the Mandingo tribe); in 1854 , Mohammedans, tukulers (a mixture of Wolof and Fulbe ), under the command of Hajj Omar , took control of the country and annexed it to the state of Segu . After the collapse of the latter in 1864 , Kaarta remained in the hands of the tukuler , under the rule of one of the sons of Hajj Omar. The main city is Kuniakari , with 5,000 inhabitants (at the beginning of the 20th century ), the most important trading point is Nioro . In early 1891 , Colonel Arshinar conquered Kaarta, and in September 1892 she was annexed to French Sudan .
