Biography
Ruslan Podgorny was born on July 25, 1977 in Vinnitsa .
He began to actively engage in cycling at the age of twelve under the guidance of coach Vasily Mikhailovich Pasternak . At the age of fifteen, he moved permanently to the White Church , where he studied at the Olympic Training Center KOSDYUSHOR βLuchβ with the honored coach Dmitry Arkhipovich Chmiruk . At first, he performed mainly on the track, only occasionally participating in highway competitions.
He achieved his first serious success in 1997 when he took second place at the Ukrainian road championship and got into the main team of the Ukrainian national team - he went with the team to the training camp in Italy, in all about 80 road races in a season. A year later, he went to the track World Championships in Bordeaux and won the team pursuit, together with Alexander Fedenko , Sergey Matveev and Alexander Simonenko . A year later, he became the two-time European champion among underders (athletes under 23), winning the individual and group races. In 2000, together with compatriots Yaroslav Popovich, Ruslan Grishchenko and Sergey Matveev, he performed in the Italian team Zoccorinese.
In 2002, Podgorny signed a contract with a professional Swiss team De Nardi , marked second place in the Ukrainian highway championship. The next season he moved to the Italian Marchiol , won first place in the Giro della Region and in the general classification of the Giro del Veneto (b). In 2004, he joined the professional Italian team LPR-Piacenza , however, he did not last long - he was soon expelled for his arrest related to the beating and robbery of a prostitute [1] [2] .
In the period 2005-2007, Podgorny played for the Irish Tenal-Salmilano team, won several races and individual stages, including the winner on the Tropho Matteotti and on the Brixia Tour. In 2008 he returned to LPR, won the Ukrainian highway championship in Sevastopol, and took third place in the general classification of the β Tour of Austria β. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Beijing Summer Olympics - in the men's group race, he was in the lead with the Belarusian Alexander Kuchinsky for a long time, but ultimately lost ground and was only fifty-third at the finish.
In 2009 and 2010, he played for the Italian team ISD-Neri , the most notable results during this period were a victory at the starting stage of the Brixia Tour, second place in the Ukrainian highway championship, and participation in the Giro d'Italia grand tour. The last professional team, in which Podgorny spoke, was the Dutch Vacansoleil-DCM , with it in 2011 he visited the β Vuelta of Spain β and the β Tour of Poland β, but did not achieve any significant achievements.
He has higher education, graduated from Vinnitsa State Pedagogical University . For outstanding sports achievements he was awarded the honorary title " Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine ". Now she lives with her family in the Bila Tserkva, has a wife Victoria and daughter Anastasia. He is the founder of the magazine "Velotraffic" [3] .
