Canidrome

Canadrome in Macau

Kanidrom ( port. Canídromo ) is a specialized complex for dog races (similar to a racetrack). Due to the successful activities of animal advocates, legislative prohibitions and the decrease in the popularity of dog races, the number of such establishments around the world is declining. For example, in the USA, as of June 2015, there are only 21 such establishments, known in this country as dog tracks or dog racing tracks [1] , and in all of Asia there is only one, in Macau (China) [2] .

Currently, the word "cander" is more often used as a proper name for a complex located in Macau (China). It is maintained by Companhia de Corridas de Galgos Macau (Yat Yuen), SA, which also owns 7 points for accepting bets (one on the canidrome itself, and 6 in different areas of the city) [3] .

In total, 730 dogs are kept on the canidrome [4] . The complex has a 400-meter running track for dogs [2] , two stands, several private boxes and a VIP box.

Dog races on the Macau canopy are usually held in the evenings, from 18:00 to midnight [2] .

It was first opened in Macau in 1931, in imitation, shortly before the opened canidrome in Shanghai (built in 1928, accommodated up to 50 thousand people). But interest in dog racing in Macau quickly subsided, and the canister closed in 1938. In 1963, the new owners repaired and reopened the canister in Macau; in 2013, he celebrated his 50th anniversary [2] .

Hound dogs ( English greyhounds ) for running in Macau come mainly from Australia, where dog races and dog breeding for them have a well-developed tradition. Decommissioned dogs are usually destroyed; according to 2010 data, 383 were killed. For this reason, in recent years, the cander in Macau has faced criticism of animal advocates [2] [5] .

There is a restaurant at the canidrome [6] .

Another famous cander previously existed in Shanghai. In 1949, it was closed by the Communists as part of the ban on gambling [2] . Many of his employees relocated to Macau, and equipment from Shanghai was used on the cando in Macau. A motor brought from Shanghai, pulling a mechanical hare, followed by dogs, is still working [2] .
