Bardil was a man of low descent who seized power as a result of an uprising. He was able to consolidate the southern Illyrians and create a strong army , in which the key role was played not by local aristocrats, as before, but by mercenaries [1] .
Bardil led an aggressive foreign policy. He paid tribute to Epirus and began a successful struggle against Macedonia. In 393/392 BC e. Bardil looted all of Macedonia and even temporarily expelled King Aminta III , who was forced to resort to an alliance with the Thessalians. In 383/382 BC e., probably followed by a second invasion, less successful [2] . King Perdiccas III in 359 BC e. tried to go on the offensive, but was utterly defeated and died in battle along with another four thousand Macedonians [3] . Only Philip II was able to defeat Bardil and conclude a peace in which the Illyrians were forced to leave Upper Macedonia and abandon part of the territory in the region of Lake Lichnids. A relative of Bardil Audat became the wife of Philip.
