Biography

Jack Rollins was born in Brooklyn in New York on March 23, 1915 as Jacob Rabinovich. He was the eldest of the three children of Luis and Sarah Rabinovich, Jewish immigrants from Russia. His father, a blacksmith from Kiev , became a tailor in New York.

In 1933, Jacob graduated from high school, in 1937 - City College of New York , after which he changed his name to Jack Rollins and worked in an orphanage in Chicago .

During the Second World War he was drafted into the army, served in India as a cryptographer. In the army, he met film actor Melvin Douglas , with his help, and was able to enter the world of show business .

In 1948, Rollins married Pearl Rose Levin (she died in 2012). He had three daughters, Susan, Hilary and Francesca, as well as four grandchildren.

After the war, he began working as a producer of the Broadway show, but due to competition he switched to the role of an impresario, having founded in 1951 an agency representing the interests of actors, writers and singers. When Charles Joffe joined him in 1952 [5] , their agency concentrated mainly on comedians.

One of his first clients was Harry Belafonte , nicknamed the king of calypso music, but in 1954 he moved to another agency [6] . Thanks to Rollins, Lenny Bruce was able to start a career on Broadway and on television. The next comedians were Mike Nichols and Elaine May.

In the late fifties, the Rollins-Joffe Agency began working with Woody Allen, examining the potential of a shy young man to become the new Orson Welles , a successful actor , director and screenwriter all rolled into one. From 1969 to 1993, all Woody Allen films, except Love and Death , were shot with the participation of Jack Rollins & Charles H. Joffe Productions [7] . At the same time, the name of Rollins was not always listed in the credits; only Joffe received the Oscar for the film " Annie Hall ".

Other Rollins clients include Robin Williams , Billy Crystal , Joan Rivers , Tony Bennett , Jim Carrey , Diane Keaton and others. Robin Williams became a client in the late seventies. [8]

From 1982 to 1992, Rollins was the producer of Late Night With David Letterman on NBC before he switched to CBS . [9]
