Idlib ( Arabic: ادلب ) is a city in northwestern Syria , the administrative center of the governorate of the same name . The population is 165,000 inhabitants (2010).

Geography
The distance to Aleppo is 40 km, to Latakia - 168 km, to Hama - 121 km.
The border with Turkey is 25 km away.
Economics
Most of Idlib’s population is employed in the agricultural sector of Aleppo . The soil around Idlib is very fertile; cotton , grain , olives , figs , grapes , tomatoes , sesame and almonds are grown here. Glass industry, soap production.
History
Historically, the Idlib region played a large role, there are many " ancient villages " and barrows . In the Middle Ages, the city was a center for the production of olives and olive soaps . Soap made in Idlib was sold in Aleppo, Hama, Antioch and Istanbul .
Civil War
In 2011 , following the events in Dara , Idlib province was swept by unrest and anti-government protests. Armed attacks on government officials began here in April. In June, Syrian security officials in the city of Jisr al-Shugur in the east of Idlib province lost 120 people, including during an attack on the headquarters of the city police and special services.
In 2012 , with the outbreak of the Civil War , the city was occupied by rebels. They controlled the city for several months. March 13, 2012 government forces after a three-day assault occupied the city [1] . In July of that year, it was reported that most of the province of Idlib was again under the control of the rebels. [2]
At the end of March 2015 , as a result of stubborn battles, the city was occupied by terrorist groups of various Islamist organizations, including the Al-Nusra Front [3] [4] .
In July 2017, Jabhat al-Nusra stormed the city of Idlib, and fights were not with government forces, but with competing terrorist groups [5] .

The city is based football club Umaya Idlib .
