Tracy Chapman ( born Tracy Chapman ; March 30, 1964 , Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American singer who performs her own songs, which often touch on sensitive social topics. Actively advocates for civil and gender equality, respect for human rights throughout the world. One of her most famous songs, “Fast Car” (1988), is dedicated to Nelson Mandela and is on the list of 500 best songs of all time from Rolling Stone magazine . Her most commercially successful record, “Give Me One Reason” (1996), won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

Biography
In 1982, Tracy Chapman graduated from Worcester Private School in Danbury , Connecticut , and enrolled at Tufts University , in Medford , Mass ., Where she majored in anthropology and African studies.
In 1986, Tracy joined the ensemble of African college drums, while developing her own folklore guitar playing. During this period, Tracy performs in the Boston folk club with acoustic songs of his own composition. At the same time, she records demos of her own songs on the radio stations of the Tufts University campus, WMFO. There she accidentally meets a student, Brian Koppelman , who recommends Tracy to his father Charles , president of SBK publishing . In turn, Charles Koppelman introduces Tracy to producer David Kirshenbaum and represents her at Elektra Records Studios (an American record company that is part of the Warner Music Group ), where she makes an acquaintance with manager Elliot Roberts. Tracy writes the song “For My Lover” for the local Fast Folk Musical Magazine , a magazine for sale with a song.
After the refusal of several producers, Tracy recorded his debut album Tracy Chapman in 1987 with the assistance of David Kirshenbaum at the Electra studio.
