General Information and History
The Donbass National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DonNASA) has been training specialists for construction and architecture since 1947, first as a faculty of the Donetsk Industrial Institute (now DonNTU), and since 1972 as an independent higher educational institution. In Donetsk and Lugansk regions, DonNASA is the only educational institution that trains architects, specialists in the field of urban construction and economy, economists and managers for construction, builders of roads and airfields.
The academy trained more than 40 thousand engineers and architects (among which more than 500 are foreign citizens). Over the years, the Academy has trained 40 doctors and 300 candidates of science, who work professionally in many countries of the world. Today, more than 5100 students study at the academy.
The educational process at the Academy is carried out by 390 teachers, including 42 doctors of sciences, professors and 180 candidates of sciences, associate professors. The academy has 22 academicians and corresponding members of industry and foreign academies. The Academy has a specialized council for the defense of doctoral and master's theses in the main specialties of the construction industry. . The Academy has 3 dissertation councils for the defense of doctoral and master's theses in the main specialties of the construction field. Only in the 2015-2016 academic year, the personnel potential was replenished with 2 doctors of sciences and 12 candidates of sciences, who were trained at the Academy.
Since 1997 , the Academy has been fruitfully working towards the European integration of a domestic civil engineer, which is now a prerequisite for joining the Bologna process.
In 2004, the construction specialties of the Academy of Industrial and Civil Engineering , Highways and Aerodromes , Urban Construction and Economy , and Architecture of Buildings were accredited for the second time by the International Institute of Civil Engineers - ICE (Great Britain) according to European requirements training of specialists in two levels of training - bachelor and master (diploma is recognized in 143 countries of the world). The Academy remains the only higher educational institution in Ukraine that has passed the procedure of professional international accreditation.
The rector of the Academy, Professor E.V. Gorokhov, is the only specialist in Ukraine who has the highest level of professional certification at ICE (Fellow). Another 10 specialists - heads of construction organizations in Donetsk region and academy teachers under the patronage of DonNASA passed professional certification at ICE. Also, more than 100 students of the Academy are certified student members of this institute. This gives them the opportunity to use databases in the construction industry, to use them in the educational and scientific process.
Organizations where certified specialists work have the opportunity to attract foreign investment and more effectively protect domestic producers.
Since 2002, the Academy began the accreditation of the educational process and research on the quality management system according to the requirements of the ISO-9001 series of standards. In 2004, for the first time, and in 2007 again, the Academy as the only university not only in Ukraine but also among the CIS countries passed the accreditation procedure and received a certificate of compliance with ISO standards.
In the educational process at the Academy, the European educational program on steel structures is used - ESDEP. DonNASA is the only educational institution in the territory of the former USSR that is an associate member of ESDEP.
In September 1998, a credit-modular system for training specialists was introduced at the academy, which in 2003 was adapted to the requirements of European educational programs. Successful completion of the international professional accreditation procedure has confirmed the high level of developed programs.
The Academy has an architectural and construction lyceum, in which the training of gifted youth and children from small towns and villages of Donetsk and Lugansk regions is carried out. At the Lyceum, with the support of the Donetsk Regional State Administration and at the expense of the Academy’s own funds, 30 orphans study annually. More than 60 orphans who have already graduated from the Lyceum, are now students of the Academy.
For the high-quality selection of applicants, the Academy has created an extensive network of basic lyceums, gymnasiums, and secondary schools in the Donbass. In 30 cities of Donetsk and Lugansk regions, 47 educational centers provide in-depth fundamental and professional training for students in grades 10-11 with the entrance examinations to the academy on the ground.
The practical implementation of scientific research at the Academy is the creation of a Testing Ground for power transmission line towers and tower structures (National Heritage of Ukraine, Resolution of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 527 of April 1, 1999). The landfill is the only one in Ukraine and the most powerful unique structure in the world. The landfill allowed Ukrainian manufacturers of building metal structures to enter the world market. Over the years of its work, 7.7 thousand tons of new electric grid structures have been saved, the economic effect amounted to 23.4 million hryvnias.
To create opportunities for students to master the latest technologies, the KNAUF-DonNASA training and production center was created at the academy with the German company KNAUF, in which training is carried out on the specialization “Plasterboard systems installer”. Now the training of specialists is carried out for Donetsk, Lugansk, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk and Odessa regions.
The center’s first executives were repeatedly visited by Andreas Knauf and Heiner Gamm. Today the center has unique new equipment for testing and using building materials and mixtures of Ukrainian gypsum stone.
According to the same scheme, centers are now being created with the DAK and REHAU firms.
The Academy works with more than 50 universities and enterprises from 18 countries: Russia , China , Lithuania , Sweden , Great Britain , Germany , Czech Republic , Slovakia , Poland and others.
The academy has a complex of units operating in the certification system of UkrSEPRO , standardization, metrology and certification of objects: certification body DonbasSEPROstroy ; Donbass Diagnostic Center; testing center for building structures and materials. By the order of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Scientific and Technical Center for Monitoring and Certification was appointed the main coordinator for the development of the Sectoral Program for the Modernization (Liquidation) of hazardous buildings, structures and engineering networks of educational institutions, organizations, institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Science
Developments by DonNASA scientists are of global importance and implemented in Russia, Greece, Israel, the Czech Republic, Germany, China and other countries.
In recent years (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2009) - 6 works (10 teachers) were awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology.
DonNASA is the coordinator of the Housing and Communal Services Reform program, which is being implemented in Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
In training specialists, the Academy pays attention to the education of civic qualities of a future specialist.
DonNASA has an ethnographic center for studying the cultural heritage of Ukraine, which operates in conjunction with the ethnographic centers of Lviv, Sorochintsy, Opishni, Svyatogorye.
For the first time in Ukraine, Ukrainian-Swedish explanatory dictionary was developed by specialists of the Academy’s humanitarian faculty, which was highly praised not only by the Swedish ambassador to Ukraine, but also by the Queen of Sweden herself.
Considering the multifaceted activity of DonNASA in implementing the principles of the Bologna process, on February 1, 2005, the Association of Building Faculties of European Countries (AECEF) accepted the academy into its membership.
In the All-Ukrainian competition of product quality “100 best goods of Ukraine-2004” DonNASA became the winner in the nomination “Educational services in the construction and architecture industry”.
