Betekhtin, Anatoly Georgievich

Anatoly Georgievich Betekhtin ( March 8, 1897 - April 20, 1962 ) - Soviet geologist and mineralogist , teacher. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953). Winner of the Lenin Prize (1958) and the State Prize (1947).

Content

Biography

Born on February 24 ( March 8 ), 1897 in the village of Strigino ( Podosinovskaya volost , Nikolsky district , Vologda gubernia [2] ) in the family of the clerk.

After graduating from the Noshul Primary School in 1910, he entered the Ust-Sysolsky School, which he graduated with a gold medal in May 1917.

He graduated in 1924 from the Leningrad Mining Institute . Since 1929 - Associate Professor, and since 1937 - Professor of this Institute.

From 1937 he worked at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

December 4, 1946 was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences.

On October 23, 1953 he was elected Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences to the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences, specializing in mineralogy, ore deposits.

In 1953-1955, he headed the Department of Ore Deposits at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, while remaining the head of the Mineralogical Laboratory of this institute.

Since 1956, at the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences as Head of the Laboratory of Mineragraphy, leading this laboratory until 1962.

He died in 1962 from a heart attack. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery .

Scientific Activities

He belonged to the pleiad of prominent geological scientists of the country who developed problems of mineralogy and the teaching of ore deposits and mineralogy. Being a student and at the same time an associate of A. N. Zavaritsky and V. I. Vernadsky , made a great contribution to the geological science, with his works he gained wide popularity and high scientific authority not only in our country, but also abroad.

He is the creator in our country of the scientific branch of the study of ore deposits - mineragraphy. Created a course of mineragraphy (the study of ores under a microscope in reflected light). He organized the Mineralogical Laboratory at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

Developed a direction in the study of ores, associated with the study of their structures and paragenesis of minerals based on the laws of physical chemistry and crystal chemistry . He discovered a regular facies change in manganese sediments and developed a theory of manganese ore formation [3] .

Published more than 200 scientific papers.

  • In 1988, a memorial plaque to A. G. Betekhtin was opened on the building of the Institute of Geology, KSC UrB RAS (Syktyvkar, Pervomayskaya st., 24). [6]

Major Works

The main works of A. G. Betekhtin are devoted to ore formation and mineragraphy. He developed a theory of the formation of manganese ores. Investigated the problem of hydrothermal solutions. The author has repeatedly republished, popular with teachers and students of the textbook " Mineralogy " [7] . Mineralogists and historians of science value the first edition of a book released as a monograph.
