Tournament format

The German Cup has been taking its history since 1935, when the raisiner of sports Hans von Chammer und Osten organized the first country cup. Then, this tournament was called Chammer-Pocal [1] .

To date, 40 teams (18 clubs of the 1st Bundesliga, 18 clubs of the 2nd Bundesliga and 4 best teams of the 3rd League) automatically fall into the tournament. The remaining places (21) are distributed among the winners of numerous regional football competitions, and the Federation determines the other three participants directly.

During seeding, teams are divided into two groups (32 each). The first group includes amateur teams, including clubs of the 3rd League. In the second group are the teams of the 1st and 2nd Bundes League excluding clubs that lost their place in the second most important league in Germany at the end of last season. Since 1982, the games are held in one round, and the weakest team always plays at home. If after the results of 90 minutes the strongest cannot be identified, then additional time is assigned, and then a series of penalties.

Before the draw of the second round, teams are again divided into two baskets according to the same principles. Thus, amateur teams that went to the next round play again with professional ones. The draw of the remaining rounds of the tournament is carried out according to a different principle: all teams end up in one basket, pairs are drawn by blind lot. The tournament finale traditionally takes place at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. This rule was adopted after the 1977 final, when replaying the final between Hertha and Cologne caused great financial costs for both teams.

The German Cup is today a fairly profitable competition. The total prize pool is over 38 million euros. The holder of the German Cup receives more than 2.5 million euros only with a bonus from broadcasts. Each club that has reached the 2nd round receives 220 thousand euros, and if it gets into the third - 450 thousand euros due to the profit from broadcasts.
