Danilovskaya Sloboda (Moscow)

Danilovskaya Sloboda ( Danilovka ) is a historical place in Moscow . At the end of the XIX century, it was part of the Nagatinsky volost of the Moscow district [1]

Historic Location

Danilovskaya Sloboda was located in the south of the Zamoskvorechye district, on the right bank of the Moscow River , near Serpukhovskaya Zastava . The main roads in the area: Bolshaya and Malaya Tula streets, Danilovsky Val , Danilovskaya embankment [2] .

History

At the end of the XIII century, the Danilovsky Monastery was built, its name was inherited by the settlement. In 1330, the monastery was moved to the Kremlin. At this place, the village of Danilovskoye began to form. In 1560 the monastery was renewed and in the XVII century Danilovskaya Sloboda appeared near it [2] .

At the end of the 18th century, a plague epidemic raged in Moscow. In 1771, the Danilovskoe cemetery was built for the burial of the dead. In 1772, a wooden church was erected near the cemetery, instead of which a stone church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit was built in 1829-1838. In 1833-1837 another church was built here - the Resurrection of the Word [2] .

At the end of the 18th century, an industrial area began to form in the settlement. According to the data of 1859, in Danilovskaya Sloboda there were 120 yards, 3,127 people lived (1,972 men and 1,155 women), 11 factories and plants were operating [3] . In 1867, Danilovskaya manufactory was built here. In 1877-1881, the Danilov Worsted Spinning Mill was founded [2] . According to the data of 1899, 1215 people lived in the Danilov settlement [1] . Workers of the district actively participated in the revolutions [2] .

In the 1930s, the area was reconstructed, the monastery and churches were closed. In 1983, the Danilovsky Monastery was returned to the Moscow Patriarchate [2] .
