Marie-Therese Bodar was born on August 7, 1909 in Arlon , Luxembourg Province, Belgium. She attended classes in philosophy, history and writing at the Free University of Brussels . Having received a diploma of a historian in 1933, Bodar began teaching at the Verviers girls school. In 1938 she published the first novel, Black Reed ( French Les Roseaux noirs ). The drama touched on incest and betrayal and was well received by literary critics. The novel was among the finalists for the Femin Prize, but it provoked a negative response in the right-wing press. The book was also not accepted at the place of work of Bodar, and she had to quit [2] [3] .

The Bodars moved to Brussels and invited poets and writers to their home, including Charles Plinye . The couple had two daughters: Anna (1939) and Francoise (1945). Most of her life, Bodar worked as a history teacher at the Lyceum Dixel in Brussels. In 1946, she published the second novel, Harvest of Barley ( Fr. oisson des orges ).
