Early life and education
The Lord was born in Brooklyn , New York into a family of Irish-American parents. His father, William Lawrence Ryan, was the director of the shipping company. [9] The lord grew up in Morris Park, which is now known as Richmond Hill in Queens , New York. [10]
The young Lord trained his rider skills on his mother’s fruit farm in the Hudson Valley [11] . When he began to spend the summer months at sea, he began to sketch landscapes that he observed from the deck of cargo ships, among which were sketches of Africa , the Mediterranean and China [12] . The lord attended many different schools; he studied at the Saint Benedict Joseph Labre Church [10] , John Adams High School and the United States Merchant Marine Academy [13] , which he graduated with the rank of ensign [14] . He attended New York University football scholarship [9] [12] and earned a degree in fine arts.
The Lord spent the first year of the United States participating in World War II in the engineering corps of the US Army, which built bridges in Persia [10] . He returned to the merchant fleet as a sailor before enrolling in naval officer courses at Fort Trambull. [15] When he took part in the filming of marine training films, he had the idea of becoming an actor.
Career
The Lord studied theater skills with Sanford Meisner [6] at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater [16] . In his youth, he worked for Horgan Ford, selling cars [11] , and then sold Cadillacs in New York to pay for his studies. He later attended Actor's Studio [17] .
Actor
Theater
The Lord’s debut on Broadway was staged by Horton Foote 's The Traveler, with Kim Stanley [18] [19] . The show lasted 30 evenings from October 27 to November 20, 1954. For his role, the Lord received the Theater World Award [20] . After that, he got the role of Brick (replacing Ben Gazzara ) [21] in the production of “ Cats on a Red- Hot Roof ” of the 1955–1956s [22] . He also appeared in The Hut, Illegal, and Savage.
Cinema
For the first time, the Lord starred in a movie in 1949 [16] in the anti-communist film Red Threat . In the 1950 film Cry Murder, he was also an assistant producer. In 1957, the Lord starred in the short film Williamsburg: The History of the Patriot [23] , and also appeared in the role of Buck Walden in the film God Divine Plot [24] , an adaptation of Erskine Caldwell’s 1933 novel.
The Lord became the first actor to play the role of Felix Leiter [7] in Bond ; the character was featured in the movie Doctor Know . According to screenwriter Richard Maybaum, the Lord insisted on equal status with Sean Connery , and also demanded an increase in his role and a greater fee for re-performing the role in the next film, " Goldfinger " [8] . In the end, director Guy Hamilton replaced him with Seca Linder .
In 1968, the Lord appeared in the movie The Game Is Called Murder with Susan Strasberg . [25] .
Television
In 1962, the Lord played the title role of a rodeo cowboy in the television series Stony Bourke [26] . The series is based on real casey champion Casey Tibbs [27] . In supporting roles, Warren Oates and Bruce Dern starred. The Lord called Gary Cooper his role model [6] and inspiration for creating the image of Stony Bourke.
The Lord was considered for the role of Eliot Ness in the television series “The Untouchables ”, but in the end, the role went to Robert Stack [28] . However, he appeared in one of the episodes of the first season of this series. In 1965, he played the guest role of Colonel Preston Gallagher in the fifth episode of the second season of the series Vertical Rise . In addition, he appeared in many television series, among which stand out “ Encounter with the adventures of ”, “ Americans ”, “ Bonanza ”, “ High bush ”, “ In battle ”, “ Agents A.N. K.L. ”,“ Reporter ”,“ Runaway ”(starring Harry Guardino ),“ Invaders ”,“ Rawhide ”,“ Iron side ”and“ FBI ”. He also starred in the first episode of the series " Find Adventures on Your Cannon ."
In an autobiography, William Shetner [29] mentions that in 1966, Gene Roddenberry offered the Lord the role of captain James T. Kirk in the TV series Star Trek (this character replaced the departed from the show Jeffrey Hunter , who played Christopher Pike ). Lord requested 50% of all rights to the show, and Roddenberry offered the role to Shetner.
Hawaii 5-O
Jack Lord helped create the Hawaii 5-O series, starring Detective Steve McGarrett for twelve years. The Governor of Hawaii appoints Steve McGarrett as the head of the fictional special police unit in Honolulu [4] . In the opening credits of the series there is a photograph of Jack Lord on the balcony of the penthouse of the Ilikai Hotel. The name of the character Chin Ho Kelly is a tribute to the founder of the hotel, Chinn Ho [5] . The Lord’s signature phrase “Beyond Bars Him , Danno” ( English Book him, Danno! ) [4] has become part of pop culture. The lord insisted on casting indigenous Hawaiians instead of actors from the mainland [4] . The Lord also insisted that his character drive Ford cars: in a pilot episode, he drives a 1967 Mercury Park Lane, in 1968-1974 he has a 1968 Park Lane, and in the remaining years of the series, McGarret drives a 1974 Mercury Marquis (namely this car was shown in a remake of 2010 ) [30] . At the time of the last episode, Hawaii 5-O was the longest running police series in US television history.
When the creator of the series, Leonard Freeman died in 1974, control of the series was shared by the Lord, CBS and Freeman’s heirs [4] , and according to the contract, the Lord became the executive producer, which gave him full control over the show. He was attentive to every detail of the series and often argued with the bosses of the channel [6] .
Artist
While studying at New York University, the Lord and his brother Bill opened the Village Academy of Arts [10] . In 1941, the Metropolitan Museum bought two of his works [9] .
Personal life
The Lord’s first marriage to Ann Cecily Willard lasted from 1944 to 1947, ending in divorce. [9] The Lord saw his son from his first marriage only once, when he was still a baby. The boy died in an accident at the age of 13 years [30] .
Jack met his second wife while looking for an apartment in upstate New York. [31] On January 17, 1949, the Lord married Marie de Narde [10] , who left her career in design to devote her life to her husband. Marie herself came up with a wardrobe for both the Lord and herself. They were married until his death in 1998.
The Lord was a heavy smoker and could not give up the habit by traditional methods. According to the Lord, it was his faith in God that helped him stop smoking [6] . The Lord and his friend visited the Catholic Church, where both knelt, and the Lord promised God that he would stop smoking.
The Lord was known as a cultured man who loved to read poetry aloud on the set of his television shows, and also as a person who spends most of his time in his house in Honolulu as a recluse [6] .
Death
After his series ended in 1980, the Lord kept a low profile and rarely appeared in public. The Lord suffered from Alzheimer's disease for two years before his own death [32] [33] . He died of heart failure at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii on January 21, 1998, at the age of 77, leaving a fortune of $ 40 million. He was a philanthropist and the whole fortune passed to Hawaiian charitable organizations after the death of his wife Marie in 2005 [34] .
Legacy
Memorial
The bronze bust of the Lord, performed by Hawaiian sculptor Lynn Weiler Liverton, was presented at a ceremony in the Kahala Mall on June 19, 2004. The Lords lived in a condominium in the Kahala area and were frequent visitors to the mall [35] [36] .
In popular culture
Operators in the USA sometimes call the 50 mm lens (“5-0”) “Jack Lord” - a reference to the series “ Hawaii 5-O ”, which glorified the actor [37] .
Actress Tracy Lords took the stage name "Lords", as she was a fan of the character of Jack Lord in "Hawaii 5-O" [38] .
