Among the historical events connected with the cathedral were the election of Leo IX by the pope (1048) and the Worms Reichstag (1521), at which Martin Luther was responsible to the emperor Charles V.
Worms Cathedral was built in 1130–1181, for which the early Romanesque basilica of the early 11th century was demolished. It stands on a hill (at the highest point of the city), where the Celts and Romans used to settle, since this place was protected from floods. Around 600, a church was erected here, considered the forerunner of the cathedral. Today, Worms Cathedral is a Catholic church. In the room under the altar, the remains of relatives and close associates of Emperor Conrad II , who died in the X-XI centuries, rest.
Worms Cathedral and the Nibelungs
One of the highlights in The Song of the Nibelungs occurs at Worms Cathedral - a quarrel between queens Krimhilda and Brunhilda over whose husband is in a higher position and who accordingly has the right to be the first to enter the cathedral. This is not historically confirmed, and perhaps the authors of The Song of the Nibelungs used the cathedral as a backstage for action.
