History
After the elections to the European Parliament on May 22–25, 2014, nationalist and other far-right parties representing the European Alliance for Freedom ", Intended to create their own faction in the European Parliament of the new convocation. The previous attempt to form a far-right faction in the European Parliament was the group “ Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty ”, which broke up with the scandal less than a year after its creation in 2007 [1] .
May 28, 2014 at a press conference in Brussels, it was announced that Marine Le Pen from the French " National Front ", Gert Wilders from the Netherlands " Freedom Party " and Matteo Salvini from the Italian " League of the North " are negotiating a coalition to form a faction [2 ] . On June 24, it became known about the inability of politicians to fulfill the criteria necessary to form a faction: the minimum number of deputies to create a faction is 25 people, they must represent at least 7 EU member states. Therefore, European parliamentarians from right-wing parties did not join any of the existing factions, becoming independent deputies [3] [4] . Later in 2014, many far-right parties, including the National Front and the League of the North, left the European Alliance for Freedom "And formed (without the participation of the" Freedom Party "from the Netherlands) a new European political party " The Movement for the Europe of Nations and Freedoms ".
On June 15, 2015, Marine Le Pen announced the launch on the next day of a new faction of the European Parliament, which will include the National Front, the Freedom Party, the League of the North, the Austrian Freedom Party, and the Flemish Interest [5] [6 ] [7] , “ Congress of the New Right "And released from the" United Kingdom Independence Party " Janice Atkinson . The creation of the group became possible after two resignations of large and contradictory figures of the far-right spectrum. First, the expulsion of Jean-Marie Le Pen from the National Front convinced the MEP from Great Britain to join the faction [8] . Secondly, the departure of Janusz Korvin-Micke from the “Congress of the New Right” gave a new impetus to the negotiations on the accession of the two remaining European deputies of this party to the faction “The Europe of Nations and Freedoms”. Previously, Wilders and Le Pen were opposed to cooperation with the "Congress" because of too radical views of Corwin-Micke [9] [10] . In the Popular Front group in the European Parliament, one of the deputies refused to join the coalition, expressing solidarity with the former front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen , and another deputy Emerick Choprad was in Fiji during the signing of the agreement [10] and joined the fraction later [ 11] .
With 37 deputies, the faction “The Europe of Nations and Freedoms” is the smallest in the European Parliament.
Composition
The faction at the time of creation includes 6 parties, uniting 35 deputies, and one independent parliamentarian [12] .
