Biography

The red dog is believed to have been born in Parabird in 1971. People called him by different nicknames: Vagrant, Tally Ho and Dog from the North-West. Tally Ho was his first nickname, her dog was given by a local resident Kol Cummings. He is considered the first owner of the dog and it was he who brought the dog to Dampir. The nickname Red Dog appeared due to the red-red mud in the Pilbara region (although this nickname is a common nickname for red kelpies and shepherd dogs ).

The second owner of the Red Dog was John Stazzonelli, a bus driver from Hamersley Iron . With him, the dog drove through Western Australia , visiting cities such as Perth , Broome , Roborn , Point Samson and Port Hedland .

After the death of Stazzonelli in 1975, Red Dog spent a lot of time traveling on his own. Then, when the dog returned to Dampier, he was accepted into the membership of the local sports and public club and the Transport Workers Union of Australia . Although the dog was very fond of, it is believed that he was deliberately poisoned by strychnine . Red Dog was buried in an anonymous grave somewhere in Roborn.

Legacy

Shortly after the death of Red Dog, the Australian writer Nancy Gillespie , having heard his story from the inhabitants of Dampier, wrote in 1983 the book "Red Dog: Pilbar Wanderer." The story of the Red Dog and the statue attracted the attention of people passing through Dampier, including the British writer Louis de Bernier . He wrote a book based on the story of the Red Dog. The film " Red Dog ", based on a book by Louis de Bernier, was released in Australia in August 2011, directed by Criv Stenders . The role of the Red Dog was played by the dog Coco .
