Komodo [1] ( indon. Pulau Komodo ) is an island in Indonesia with an area of 390 km². It has a volcanic origin. Its population is only 2 thousand people (2006).

Geography
Komodo belongs to the Lesser Sunda Islands and is located between the larger neighboring islands of Sumbawa in the west and Flores in the east. It is part of the Komodsky National Park . Komodo monitor lizards living here are especially famous.
Population
The inhabitants of the island are descendants of former prisoners who were landed on the island and who later mixed with the Boogie tribe from the island of Sulawesi . The majority of the population professes Islam , but there is a Christian and Hindu minority.
Tourism
Coastal regions of the sea are a popular place for scuba divers. Many tourists come here from the island of Bali to see the unique terrestrial and underwater flora and fauna of Komodo.
