Career

He spent his professional football career in Serie B and C. After finishing his career due to an ankle injury, he began to assist in a number of Italian clubs Serie C1 and B. since 2000.

In 2004, without the presence of a professional license, he headed the Ascoli club, being appointed assistant coach, with whom he got into the playoff selection for Serie A. Despite the fact that the club did not qualify due to a number of refusals to play in the top division of Italy “ Ascoli ”ended up in Serie A. In 2006, Giampaolo was disqualified for 2 months due to the fact that he continued to lead Ascoli without a coaching license.

After serving the suspension, he helped keep the club in the division and moved to Cagliari . In December 2006 he was suspended, and in February 2007 he was already reinstated in his role in Cagliari. After saving the club from relegation, he was approved by the coach for the next season, but was again dismissed in November 2007. Later, Giampaolo was again invited to Cagliari, but he refused to return to the club and headed Siena .

In May 2010, he was replaced by Sinish Mikhailovich as the Katanya club [1] .

In 2011, he headed “ Cesena ” [2] , but due to unsatisfactory results the team was soon dismissed [3] .

In 2013, he returned to Serie B to the Brescia club, but was again fired early from the club after a conflict with fans and his disappearance from the club for several days [4] .

In June 2015, he headed Empoli [5] . After a successful season at the Tuscan club, Giampaolo became a Sampdoria coach [6] , with whom he worked for the next 3 years. On June 15, 2019, it terminated the contract with Sampdoria by mutual consent [7] .

On June 19, 2019 he was appointed head coach of Milan . The contract was signed until June 30, 2021 with the possibility of extension for another year [8] .
