Underground Empire (Season 1)

The first season of the Underground Empire series , which premiered on HBO on September 19, 2010, and the final episode was released on December 5, 2010, consists of 12 episodes. The series was created by Terence Winter and is based on the book Underground Empire: Birth, Dawn and Corruption in Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson.

At the dawn of Prohibition, in January 1920, Enoch “Naki” Thompson, the treasurer of Atlantic City, was developing a scheme on how to make himself and his associates very rich in the illegal sale of alcoholic beverages by entering into business with Charlie Luciano and Arnold Rothstein . Nucky is approaching an attractive pregnant woman, Margaret Schroeder, who asks him to help find a job for her husband. Jimmy Darmody, a former Naki’s protégé, returns from France after the end of World War I, cherishing ambitious plans for his future - he is participating with Al Capone in an adventurous operation to smuggle alcohol, which could have serious consequences for him and for Naki . This episode covers the period from January 13 to May 11, 1920.

On a visit to Naki comes the respectable Nelson Van Alden, an agent of the Internal Revenue Service, who suspects that Thompson is behind all the major crimes in the city. Naki enlisted the support of his younger brother, Sheriff Elias Thompson, so that he “cleared the ends” and averted suspicions. Before heading out for a social evening, Nucky secretly meets with Margaret and gives her money to provide for her young children. After the incident with Al Capone and a reporter in Chicago, Naki discusses the upcoming election with his senior mentor, Commander Lewis Kastner.

Naki makes a deal with African-American gangster Melk to arrange the supply and distribution of illegal whiskey. Thanks to Naki's connections, Margaret gets a job in a boutique, where her mistress Lucy annoys her with her whims. Agent Van Alden, having applied a cruel interrogation to the wounded, finds out that Jimmy participated in a forest shootout. This exposure forces Nucky to send Jimmy from Atlantic City.

Jimmy and Capone expand their business in Chicago, capturing territories from a local Irish gangster, in response, he extremely brutally avenges Pearl, Jimmy's beloved prostitute. Luciano shows interest in Jillian, Jimmy's mother, following him at the request of Rothstein.

Margaret, thinking that Naki neglects her, passes the information to agent Van Alden, who raids at the annual Celtic dinner party in honor of St. Patrick. As a result, Naki comes home to her at night.

The spouses of Van Alden are very worried about the inability to have children. Rothstein is in trouble with the law due to his fraud in the 1919 world baseball championship. Naki asks Jimmy to return to Atlantic City to strengthen his shaky position.

However, he is being detained by Agent Van Alden due to suspicions of a shootout in the forest. Margaret asks Nucky for Madame Janet, the hostess of the boutique, enjoying the newfound influence. Angela realizes that her new romantic relationship is in jeopardy due to the arrival of Jimmy.

Van Alden has an emotional breakdown after talking with Margaret and dating Lucy.

Naki throws all his strength so that the election day in Atlantic City passes as it should and the power in the city remains in the hands of the Republicans. Torrio acts as a mediator in the negotiations between Naki and Rothstein in order to resolve their protracted conflict by the world, simultaneously removing the threat of federal litigation from Rothstein. Jimmy and Eli each are indignant at his own occasion because of Naki’s arrogance, but they discover that they are not alone in their hostility: they are joined by an equally angry commander who understands that he has lost influence on his mature student. Van Alden intends to leave Atlantic City, but receives unexpected news from Lucy. Margaret learns the secret of Naki’s first marriage and decides to associate his fate with him, wishing a prosperous life for himself and his children.
