Biography
Reynald II was the son of Reynald I and Margarita of Flanders. In 1316 he rebelled against his father, in 1318 he imprisoned him in the fortress of Monfort, and he ruled as "the son of the count." After the death of his father in 1326, he declared himself Count of Geldern and Zutphen.
Reynald began to support the English king Edward III against France, in 1338 he warned him about the appearance of the French fleet before Zwin . He remained one of Edward's closest allies among the German rulers during the first stage of the Hundred Years War .
On March 19, 1339, the imperial Reichstag in Frankfurt gave Reynald the title of “Duke Geldern and Count Zutphen,” making him imperial prince. This was made possible thanks to the mediation of Reynald between Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria , who was married to Margaret of Holland , and King Edward III, who was the brother of Reynald's second wife.
