The fourth season of The Underground Empire , which premiered on HBO on September 8, 2013, and the final episode was released on November 24, 2013, consists of 12 episodes. [1] The series was created by Terence Winter and is based on the book Underground Empire: Birth, Dawn, and Corruption in Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson. Happening in Atlantic City, New Jersey , during Prohibition , the series features Steve Buscemi as Enoch “Naki” Thompson (based on the historical character Enoch L. Johnson), [2] a politician who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City, New Jersey, during Prohibition from the 1920s to the 1930s. The fourth season takes place in 1924. The fourth season was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the first region on August 19, 2014. [3]

| February 1924 Naki, preferring to stay in his room at the Albatross Hotel and away from the underground, comes to a peace agreement with Masseria from Rothstein. Richard, on his way home to reunite with his sister, leaves several corpses in the morning. Gillian, still addicted, but desperate to bring her grandson back, resorted to prostitution until a stranger made her the best offer. Saviki's new partner agent, Warren Knox, is not as naive as he behaves. | Crayon is under pressure from Valentine Narcissus, Harlem kingpin who knows what Dunn did. Van Alden has to deal with his stubborn middle-class wife; at work he has to deal with an angry Al Capone. Knox's real boss, it turns out, is J. Edgar Hoover . Before he leaves for Florida to visit an old friend, Nucky has to pacify the frustrated Eddie and he gives him a raise. | While visiting Bill McCoy in Tampa, Nucky becomes intrigued by Sally Whit, the local bar owner. Roy asks Gillian to pretend to be his wife. Daffodil meets Rothstein and, later, orders Doter Maitland singers for Onyx Club. For a college party, Eli's son, Willy, is trying to get a drink from Mickey's warehouse. Nucky holds Willy with his false alibi, pays off the Philadelphia District Attorney to set him free, and releases him with some good-natured advice not long before his neighbor Willy was arrested for Gaines' death. | Naki and Margaret have a tense date at Penn Station before he leaves for Florida. While Eddie’s death is being investigated, Eli finds Eddie’s key to the bank's valuables box, but does not have access to it. Richard returns and confronts Paul Sagorski after he received harsh news from his doctor. Chalk draws closer to Dotter Maitland. Knox, pretending to be an agent of Prohibition again, returns to Mickey’s warehouse, but cannot escape from Eddie’s shadow. In Tampa, Naki, Lansky and Luciano meet a new partner, led by Bill. | As soon as the news of the arrest of Leopold and Loeb was circulated in the newspapers, Al Capone, still raging in grief over Frank's death, kills the policeman. Dunn deals with church concerns about heroin in society. Willie flies out of college. After the arrest of Johnny Torrio during a police raid at a distillery, he gives Capone the go-ahead to kill Irish. Roy helps Gillian quit her habit, but confesses to an obsession with her own. After the other gangsters killed O'Banion at his store counter, Van Alden takes $ 1000 for his corpse. Rothstein is in talks with Nucky about a safety plan. | Crayon and Dauter arrive in Le Havre de Grace to stay with Oscar Bono, his old mentor. Gillian says goodbye to Tommy and looks further into life with Roy when he proposes to her. Knox pushes Eli to arrange a meeting between East Coast bosses on the net. The crayon wakes up and sees that Doter is gone. Some of the people of Narcissus crash into the house, killing a blind Oscar. Gillian is deceived by Roy, who is actually Pinkerton's agent to confess to Roger's murder. Naki tells Narcissus that Chalk wants to meet him. After a barely unsuccessful assassination attempt on Torrio, he transfers the entire operation to Capone. | ||||||

Critical Reaction
The fourth episode of The Underground Empire received positive reviews from critics. On the Metacritic website, season four received a rating of 77/100 based on 13 reviews. [16] Another website, Rotten Tomatoes , reported that 95% of critics gave the fourth season a “Certified Fresh” rating based on 21 reviews with an average rating of 8.2 / 10. [17]

At the 20th Cinema Actors Guild Award Ceremony , the cast was nominated for best cast in a drama series, Steve Buscemi was nominated for best drama actor and the series was nominated for best stunt ensemble. [18] Jeffrey Wright was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the drama series 4th Critics' Choice Television Awards .
