Underground Empire (Season 4)

The fourth season of The Underground Empire , which premiered on HBO on September 8, 2013, and the final episode was released on November 24, 2013, consists of 12 episodes. [1] The series was created by Terence Winter and is based on the book Underground Empire: Birth, Dawn, and Corruption in Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson. Happening in Atlantic City, New Jersey , during Prohibition , the series features Steve Buscemi as Enoch “Naki” Thompson (based on the historical character Enoch L. Johnson), [2] a politician who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City, New Jersey, during Prohibition from the 1920s to the 1930s. The fourth season takes place in 1924. The fourth season was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the first region on August 19, 2014. [3]

February 1924 Naki, preferring to stay in his room at the Albatross Hotel and away from the underground, comes to a peace agreement with Masseria from Rothstein. Richard, on his way home to reunite with his sister, leaves several corpses in the morning. Gillian, still addicted, but desperate to bring her grandson back, resorted to prostitution until a stranger made her the best offer. Saviki's new partner agent, Warren Knox, is not as naive as he behaves. Crayon tries to calmly launch the Onyx Club, but his right hand, Dunn Purnsley, gets into trouble with the booking agent and his wife.

Knox's real boss, it turns out, is J. Edgar Hoover . Before he leaves for Florida to visit an old friend, Nucky has to pacify the frustrated Eddie and he gives him a raise. Valentin Narcisse puts an end to the conflict with the wife of the ticket agent, killing her with his people.

Richard was in trouble and his sister came to his aid.

Nucky holds Willy with his false alibi, pays off the Philadelphia District Attorney to set him free, and releases him with some good-natured advice not long before his neighbor Willy was arrested for Gaines' death. Eddie, returning to the Albatross and feeling guilty about Naki's betrayal of trust, jumps out of the window to death.

Some of the people of Narcissus crash into the house, killing a blind Oscar. Gillian is deceived by Roy, who is actually Pinkerton's agent to confess to Roger's murder. Nucky agrees to go for peace talks.

Naki tells Narcissus that Chalk wants to meet him. After a barely unsuccessful assassination attempt on Torrio, he transfers the entire operation to Capone.

Critical Reaction

The fourth episode of The Underground Empire received positive reviews from critics. On the Metacritic website, season four received a rating of 77/100 based on 13 reviews. [16] Another website, Rotten Tomatoes , reported that 95% of critics gave the fourth season a “Certified Fresh” rating based on 21 reviews with an average rating of 8.2 / 10. [17]

Awards and nominations

At the 20th Cinema Actors Guild Award Ceremony , the cast was nominated for best cast in a drama series, Steve Buscemi was nominated for best drama actor and the series was nominated for best stunt ensemble. [18] Jeffrey Wright was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the drama series 4th Critics' Choice Television Awards .
