The Japanese team as an organizer, the US team as the current world champion and two teams from each of the five continental zones took part in the competition.

The participants from Europe are determined by the rating of the European Volleyball Confederation , and the participants from Asia - by the rating of the International Volleyball Federation at the beginning of 2015 (excluding the Japanese team). From the South American Confederation , the two strongest teams qualified for the World Cup following the qualifying tournament in Comodoro Rivadavia , from NORCECA - the two strongest teams of the NORCECA Championship Cup in Havana . Africa at the World Cup was represented by the finalists of the continental championship [1] .

Tournament

The fight for two Olympic trips was fought between five teams - Russia , the USA , China , Serbia and Japan . At the start of the tournament in Matsumoto, Serbs lost to the Chinese - 1: 3, but beat the United States - 3: 2, and the Chinese women, in turn, lost to the current world champions in three games. At the same time, the Russian team won 5 victories in Tokyo , including in a tough match with the Japanese.

In the framework of the second round in Sendai, the Serbian team took the most important steps towards winning the Olympic license. In the seventh match of the tournament, Zoran Terzic’s wards inflicted their first defeat on the Russians, having recouped from the score 0-2 in batches, and the next day they also defeated the hosts of the tournament in five games. Thus, before the final round of the Cup, the national teams of the USA, Russia, China and Serbia had one loss each, and the Japanese team with two losses almost dropped out of the fight for the Olympic license.

At the end of the tournament, the result of a single match between the teams of the leading group seriously affected the arrangement at the top of the tournament table. In Nagoya, the Russian team won an impressive victory over the United States - 3: 0, but lost to China - 1: 3, after which both the Americans and the Russians had only theoretical chances to win Olympic tickets before the final game day, which were not realized. The Chinese team took first place, and the Serbs won three victories over the β€œpassing” rivals in the parallel group in Komaki , the owners of the second ticket to the Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The table shows the places occupied by teams after each game day of the World Cup.
