Biography
He spent his childhood in Ashgabat , where he first studied in the karate section, and then went on to athletics. Soon after the collapse of the Soviet Union, his family moved to the Orenburg region [1] . Here the initial stage of Nikolai’s running career took place, during which he trained under the direction of Sait Kiramov and performed 800 and 1,500 meters in running. In 2006 he moved to Moscow, replacing his coach. The new mentor of Nicholas was Mikhail Monastyrsky.
In 2008, he twice won the national championship in cross-country: spring championship at 4 km and autumn championship at a distance of 10 km . The next two seasons also ended up on the podium of cross-country competitions, however, the lack of serious progress at the main distance of 1,500 meters forced him to change his specialization.
In 2011, Nikolai for the first time ran 3000 meters with obstacles and immediately became one of the country's strongest athletes in this discipline. At the Znamensky brothers memorial, he took 8th place (third among Russians) with a time of 8.29.71. In less than a month, he managed to be on the podium of the Russian championship . Third place with a personal record of 8.26.78 [2] provided an opportunity to perform at the Universiade in Chinese Shenzhen . The final result at the student games was worthy - 4th place (8.35.10).
The very next year, at the national championship qualifying for the Olympic Games , Nikolai won a landslide victory, fulfilled the Olympic standard and was included in the national team [3] . The London Games ended for Chavkin at the stage of preliminary races: according to the sum of the results of all the participants, he became the 22nd (8.29.72).
In 2013, he took 4th place at the European Team Championship in British Gateshead, brought the team 9 credits and thus contributed to the final victory of the Russian team.
The season of 2014, Nikolai began in January with his debut at the Houston marathon (2: 14.02). In June, he became the third at the European Team Championship in his discipline and a silver medalist in the national team. A month later, at the Vladimir Kuts memorial in Moscow, he set a new record for Russia at a rarely held distance of 2000 meters with obstacles - 5.26.85 (the previous achievement lasted from 1990).
The second victory at the championships of Russia in the steeplechase was won in the same 2014 in Kazan. Thanks to this title, Nikolai went to the European Championship in Zurich, but he did not manage to win laurels there: only 14th place in the final .
In 2009, he graduated from the Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation with a degree in Public Relations [4] .
He stands for the sports society Dynamo [5] .
