Biography
Born in Frederiksberg in the family of an accountant. After studying as a home artist, he studied art under the leadership of Hans Gronwold at the Copenhagen Technical School (1883-85). Later he studied at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts , from which he graduated in 1888. Then he studied under Laurits Tuksen and Frans Schwartz at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler Free School of Artists (1888-92). [one]
Creativity
In the early years, Clement was greatly influenced by his friend Mogens Ballin , who introduced him to modern French symbolists . In 1890 he was introduced to Paul Gauguin and his friends in France, thanks to which Clement began to communicate with Johann Jørgensen and worked in the symbolist magazine "Taarnet". The symbolism is clearly seen in the work of Clemente "Den hellige Frans og de tre hvide jomfruer" (St. Francis and three white maidens) and in others who were exhibited in Kunsthal Charlottenborg in 1893.
However, traveling in Italy since 1890, he soon became imbued with the art of the Italian Renaissance - he copies the works of Masaccio and Lorenzo di Credi . The clarity and colors of this style can be seen in the paintings "Portræt af en landsbypræst, pastor Vaupell" (1894) and "Frou Bertha Brandstrup" (1898). At the beginning of the next century, Clement departs from this demanding style and favors quieter realism . [1] [2]
He begins to focus on landscapes, especially in Italy, where he travels in Rome , as well as in Civita d'Antino in the years 1900-1904. He also becomes a frequent visitor to the community of artists in Skagen in northern Jutland , where he and his wife Tupsi were often in the company of Laurits Tuxen and Viggo Johansen . Since 1920, the couple mainly spends his time in Italy. [2] In addition to landscapes, he also paints portraits, flowers and interiors. The way he portrays children reveals the non-sentimental understanding of the artist’s characters in his paintings. [one]
Family
In 1902, in Rome, Clement marries a Norwegian artist named Martha Carolina Ebet (hereinafter referred to as Tupsi Clement ), who went with him every summer to Skagen and subsequently to Italy. [3] Tupsi Clement outlived her husband. They had no children. [one]
Awards
Clement was a member of the Academy Council (1920–29). He received many awards, including the Academy Award and the gold medal in Munich. [four]
