Biography
He came from the clergy and received his initial education in the Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary . Then he studied at the Kazan Theological Academy , after which in 1856 he was awarded a master's degree and was left with a bachelor at the academy.
In 1859, Lilov joined the Ministry of Education and devoted himself to teaching in the Caucasus. He was a senior teacher of Russian literature of the Tiflis gymnasium [2] and inspector of the Stavropol gymnasium [3] . At the opening of the 2nd Tiflis Classical Gymnasium in 1878, Alexander Ilyich Lilov was appointed its director and remained in this position until his death.
Carrying out pedagogical activity, Lilov closely followed social issues and took part in resolving them and devoted part of his activity to Caucasian journalism. In the newspaper Kavkaz , when it was published by Vorontsov , he was in charge of the political department, and also worked in Philological Notes and Russian Wealth . The Caucasus owes to him many ethnographic essays and articles that he placed in The Caucasus and in the Collection of Materials for Describing the Locations and Tribes of the Caucasus . In the " Orthodox Interlocutor " was published several studies of Lilov on the history of the south-west of Russia, as well as his description of the Solovetsky library. He published a textbook for the joint study of Russian and Latin (1876). The largest of Lilov’s scholarly works, “On the So-called Cyril Book : Bibliographic Presentation in Relation to the Verbal Old Believers ”, is one of the valuable manuals on the history of the Old Believers.
