Description
Small earthen ants (2-3 mm long) are yellowish red in color. It differs from other species by a wider stalk (petiol) and a finer sculpture on the dorsal surface of the mesosome. Antenna workers with a 4-segmented mace. The eyes of the workers are small, located in the mid-side of the head. The mandibles are elongated, subtriangular with three teeth: the apical tooth is the largest, the preapical tooth is the smallest, the third tooth is of medium length. The mandibular palps are 2-segmented, the lower labial palps are composed of 2 segments (palp formula 2.2). Spurs on all legs are crested, but there is an additional simple spur on the back pair of legs (spurs formula: 1gr-1gr-1gr + 1pr). The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of one segment of the petiolus , which does not have a posterior surface, since it is widely attached to the abdomen. They nest in the soil under any objects (stones, roots), ants rarely appear on the surface and forag in the underlying foliage layer [1] .
Systematics
The species was first described in 2008 by Australian worldmecologist Stephen Shattak (Shattuck, Steven O .; CSIRO Entomology, Canberra , Australia ) based on materials from Indonesia. It is close to the species Prionopelta kraepelini and Prionopelta opaca [1] .
