Description

Small earthen ants (2-3 mm long) are yellowish brown in color. They are distinguished by a reduced mesosome sculpture and rounded antero-lateral corners of the head at the base of the mandibles. Antenna workers with a 4-segmented mace. The eyes of the workers are small, located in the mid-side of the head. The mandibles are elongated, subtriangular with three teeth: the apical tooth is the largest, the preapical tooth is the smallest, the third tooth is of medium length. The mandibular palps are 2-segmented, the lower labial palps are composed of 2 segments (palp formula 2.2). Spurs on all legs are crested, but there is an additional simple spur on the back pair of legs (spurs formula: 1gr-1gr-1gr + 1pr). The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of one segment of the petiolus , which does not have a posterior surface, since it is widely attached to the abdomen. They nest in the soil under any objects (stones, roots), ants rarely appear on the surface and forag in the underlying foliage layer [1] [2] .

Systematics

The species Prionopelta majuscula was first described in 1897 by Italian worldmecologist Carlo Emery [3] , and its valid status was confirmed in 2015 during an audit conducted by American worldmecologists Rick Overson ( Rick Overson ; Chicago Botanic Garden , Glencoe, USA ) and Brian Fisher ( Brian Fisher ; California Academy of Sciences , San Francisco , USA) [1] [2] .
