History

Early History - The Middle Ages

The history of Blankenrath dates back to the period of the 9th - 10th centuries, at a time when epidemics of diseases and constant wars forced migrants to withdraw from their acquired places and look for a place to live away from the inhabited river valleys, such as the nearby Moselle Valley . According to local studies, the village grew out of three peasant holdings named Metzenhof ( German: Metzenhof ), Geiershof ( German: Geiershof ) and Rumershof ( German: Rumershof ).

The historical evidence of the development of the settlement can be, first of all, a letter on vassal dependence of Blankenrat, owned by Gerlach von Braunshorn ( German Gerlach von Braunshorn ), dating back to 1347 and attributing all possession to Count Johann von Kleve ( German Johann von Kleve ). In 1362 , after the death of Gerlach, through the marriage of his descendants, the place passed into the possession of the count family of Winneburg (the ruins of the castle of Winneburg are still available for inspection near the town of Cochem in the Moselle River Valley). Later, these possessions were annexed to the Trier Archbishopric , the county of Sponheim ( German: Sponheim ) and the county of Beilstein. This happened during the reign of the grandchildren of Gerlach, whose names were Kuno and Gerlach von Winneburg; due to family debts, they laid Blankenrath in 1375 in the Trier Archbishopric for 17,000 guilders. Their descendants did not collect such a whole amount and as a result, 164 years after the initial money transfer, the amount increased to 17,400 guilders. However, by that time the family no longer had any hopes for the return of ownership, the archbishopric and Sponheim so strengthened their influence that the deal did not happen.

In 1690, the whole village was destroyed during the war, only three farms were preserved.

Late Middle Ages - New Time

Meanwhile, controversy continued regarding the one who has the dominant right to own this place. Disagreements of various kinds continued for more than two and a half centuries, and were even discussed in the Imperial Cameral Court in Wetzlar , but no solution was found. The conflict finally turned into a purely theoretical legal dispute only when the entire Holy Roman Empire of the German nation with all its ruling institutions, including all ruling families and the imperial cameral court, was wiped off the face of the earth in the late XVIII - early XIX centuries as a result of the French revolutionary wars and intervention by Napoleon I Bonaparte .

Starting in 1794 , Blankenrath was under French control. The neighboring village of Raidenhausen , which until then constituted a single municipality, was separated. In 1814, Blankenrat was annexed to the Kingdom of Prussia as a result of the Vienna Congress assembled by the victorious countries, and according to his decisions, amt Blankenrat was established.

Newest Time

Since 1946, Blankenrath has been part of the newly formed federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate . According to the terms of the Law on Facilitation of Management ( German Verwaltungsvereinfachungsgesetz ) signed on July 18, 1970 , which entered into force on November 7, 1970, the municipality, by joining the others, formed part of the integrated Zell community ( German Zell Verbandsgemeinde ), having lost the status of amt during the post-war administrative reforms [2] .
