Royal Academy of French Language and Literature (Belgium)

The Royal Academy of French Language and Literature ( French Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique, ARLLFB) is a Belgian cultural and scientific institution whose purpose is to disseminate and develop French language and literature in Belgium and other French-speaking countries.

It unites French-speaking cultural figures: writers, literary critics, scholars and philologists who have made a significant contribution to the development and study of the French language or literature. Members of the Academy are both Belgian citizens and representatives of other countries.

At the same time, in Belgium there is the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature (until 1974 - the Royal Flemish Academy of Language and Literature), as well as the Royal Academy of Sciences, Writing and Fine Arts of Belgium (Theresa).

History

The Academy was founded in 1920 by the King of Belgium Albert I.

Structure

The Academy has 40 members elected for life. Of these, 30 seats were reserved for Belgian and 10 for foreign members. 26 seats are reserved for writers and 14 for philologists.

Activities

The Academy has established 23 academic awards for the best literary works of various genres and for various achievements in the field of studies of the French language and literature.

Location

The Academy is located in Brussels in the Palace of Academies near the Royal Palace and the Royal Park (address: Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique Palais des Académies, rue Ducale 1, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgique ).
