Lippman (Moon Crater)

Lippmann Crater ( lat. Lippmann ) - a large ancient impact crater in the southern hemisphere of the far side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the French physicist Gabriel Lippmann (1845-1921) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1979. Crater Description

The immediate neighbors of the crater are the Fizeau Crater in the west; Mendel Crater in the north; Chadwick Crater in the east-northeast; crater De Roi in the east; Petsval crater in the south and Watson crater in the southwest [2] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 160 km [3] , depth 3 km [1] .

Lippman Crater has a polygonal shape and is significantly destroyed over a long time of its existence. The shaft is flattened and covered by many craters of various sizes, the southeastern part of the shaft is covered by the large satellite crater Lippman Q (see below), the southwest satellite crater Lippman L. Traces of a terrace-like structure are visible in the eastern part of the inner slope. The bottom of the bowl is relatively flat, with the exception of the crossed eastern part, southwest of the center of the bowl there is a notable satellite crater Lippman P. In the southern part of the bowl there is an arched chain of craters. A chain of valleys stretching north-north-east to Mendel Crater departs from the northwestern part of the rampart of Lippmann Crater. To the northwest of Lippman Crater is a massive nameless peak with a height of over 6,000 m.
