For the first time the title of Count Carnarvon ( peer of England ) was created in 1628 for Robert Dormer, 2nd Baron Dormer (1610-1643). He was succeeded by the eldest son John Dormer, 2nd Earl of Carnarvon and 3rd Baron Dormer (1632–1709). He was married twice, but his only son, Charles, died during his father's lifetime. After the death of the 2nd Earl of Carnarvon, the title was lost.

In 1714, the title of Earl of Carnarvon ( peer of Great Britain ) was re-created for James Bridges, 9th Baron Chandos (1673-1744). In 1719 he received the titles of the Marquis of Carnarvon and the Duke of Chandos. In 1789, after the death of his grandson, James Bridges, 3rd Duke of Chandos and 3rd Earl of Carnarvon (1731-1789), the title was again interrupted.
