Museum History
The museum was created in 1924 [3] at the initiative and efforts of teachers and students of the Ganja Pedagogical Seminary [4] . Among the students who initiated the opening of the museum in Ganja were Iskhag Jafarzade, S. Seidov, F. Melikov, and others [5] . Initially, two departments were created in the museum: agriculture and local history, in which about five hundred exhibits were displayed [1] .
In 1927, in Hanlar (modern Goychay ), the German archaeologist Hummel conducted archaeological excavations in the region, namely on the territory of the Ganjach River [4] st. Part of the exhibits found as a result of excavation by Jacob Humemel donated to the Khanlar Museum of Local Lore, and the rest was sent to Germany. In 1961, the liquidated local history museum of Khanlar was annexed to the Ganja Museum of History and Local Lore.
Every year the number of exhibits in the museum grew, and therefore in 1954 he moved to a new, more spacious building. By that time, the museum already had three departments: pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods and local history. In the seven halls of the museum several thousand different exhibits were exhibited [1] .
In 1972 , given the museum’s overgrown fund, the city administration allocated an old mansion with a large number of rooms to it, before the revolution belonged to Abulfat Khan from the Ziyadkhanov family [1] , and later to his son Ismail Khan Ziyatkhanov [4] . The museum is still located in this building [1] .
Collection
The museum has 18 halls, which store nearly 30 thousand objects and exhibits, reflecting various periods of the region’s historical past, dating back to ancient times. Among the most valuable of them are dishes, weapons and jewelry of the Bronze Age of the second half of the 9th millennium BC. e. most of which were found during archaeological excavations in the territory of Ganja and the areas adjacent to the city [1] .
The main fund of the museum has 24.785 exhibits, of which 4483 are archaeological, 1648 are ethnographic, 392 are art, 9 are sculptural objects, 2753 are photographs, 9259 are documents, 3441 are numismatic objects.
A considerable part of the museum’s collection is made up of exhibits from the period of Ganja-Garabakh culture (clay and copper utensils). There are dishes and weapons dating back to the Middle Ages, as well as a collection of coins, jewelry and clothing of this era. The center of this department is the banner of the last Ganja Khan - Javad Khan , found during his reburial, and a number of exhibits dating to the beginning of the 19th century [1] . One of the halls of the museum is dedicated to a native of the city, a prominent classic of Persian poetry Nizami Ganjavi [4] .
The museum collection is replenished. Basically, objects and exhibits of the Soviet period (1920-1990s) are brought to the museum: household utensils, books, magazines, newspapers, numismatics and the like. One of the most valuable exhibits acquired in recent years was a collection of poems by a native of the city of Mirza, Shafi Vazekh , published in 1872 in Berlin [1] .
Currently, the museum consists of two departments: the ancient period and the modern era. The first branch covers history from the ancient period to the end of the 19th century.
