Linnaeus (Moon Crater)

Linné Crater ( lat. Linné ) is a small, relatively young impact crater in the northwestern part of the Sea of Clarity on the visible side of the Moon . Crater formation refers to the Copernican period [1] .

Crater Description

The closest neighbors of the crater are Santos Dumont Crater in the west; Bunting Crater in the east-southeast; Hornsby Crater in the south and Joy Crater in the southwest. In the north-west of the crater are the mountains of the Caucasus and beyond them the Sea of Rains ; in the southwest - the Apennines [2] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 2.23 km [3] , depth 600 m [4] .

Linnaeus Crater is formed in the thickness of basalt rocks of the Sea of Tranquility and has a truncated conical shape [5] . A shaft with a clearly defined sharp edge is surrounded by a dune-shaped area of rocks with a high albedo ejected during the formation of the crater. The inner slope is smooth, with radial stripes around the perimeter.

Linnaeus Crater is one of the craters in which temperature anomalies are recorded during eclipses . This is explained by the fact that such craters are small in age and the rocks did not have time to become covered with regolith , which has a thermally insulating effect.

In 1868, the German astronomer Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt made a statement that the Linnaeus crater changed its shape. This statement, in all likelihood, was caused by the imperfection of the observational instruments of that time, but it served as a surge of interest in selenography .

Short Moon Phenomena

Short-term lunar phenomena (CL) in the form of an increase in the size of a light spot during eclipses were observed in Linnaeus Crater.
