The mouth of the Meuse ( French Bouches-de-la-Meuse ) is the administrative unit of the First French Empire , located on the lands of the modern Netherlands province of South Holland . The department is named after the river Meuse , whose name in French sounds like "Meuse."

The department was created on January 1, 1811, after the Kingdom of Holland was annexed by France.
After the defeat of Napoleon, these lands became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands .
