Hydrocins

Hydrocins [1] , or tiger fish [1] ( lat. Hydrocynus ) - a genus of large ray-finned fish of the African tetra family . The name of the genus comes from the ancient Greek words ὕδωρ ("water" [2] ) + κύων ("dog" [2] ). Endemic to Africa . The genus contains five species, all popularly known as “African tiger fish” because of their ferocious predatory behavior and other characteristics that make them excellent objects for sport fishing [3] . Representatives of the genus Hydrocynus are the only freshwater fish that can catch birds flying over water [4] . They reach lengths from 25 cm ( H. tanzaniae ) to 133 cm and masses of about 50 kg ( large tiger fish ) [5] .
