Since the formation of the State of Israel in 1948, more than 400 Israeli soldiers have been declared “missing in the line of duty”. The construction of the Garden of the Missing on Mount Herzl was initiated and headed by Moshe Oren , as head of the Department for the Commemoration of the Ministry of Defense. The garden was opened on February 29, 2004; The ceremony was attended by army leaders, Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and members of the Jerusalem municipality.
“Empty graves” and stone monuments dedicated to the memory of missing soldiers are located in the garden. At the entrance to the garden there is a small square where the annual memorial services for the missing Israeli soldiers are held on the day of the Seventh Adar . On its north side is a memorial wall on which the names of all missing soldiers, soldiers and officers of different nationalities are indicated. From the wall falls waterfall. There, on the north side of the square, there are monuments to the sailors who perished aboard the submarine “ Dakar ”, which sank in the Mediterranean, and “Twenty-three sunk into the sea”. The monument to unknown soldiers is scheduled to be temporarily transferred to the National Memorial by 2017.
In 1954, an ancient Jewish burial cave of the Second Temple period was discovered nearby.
