Biography
Born October 18, 1908 in Moscow in a family of employees.
In 1925 he graduated from secondary school No. 32 of the Krasnopresnensky district of Moscow and in 1926 entered the soil and geology faculty of Moscow University . In 1930, in connection with the reorganization of higher geological education, he was transferred to the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute , which he graduated in 1931 with a degree in geology.
He was sent to work in Sverdlovsk in the Ural branch of applied mineralogy. However, due to his illness, he could not be in field research and in 1932 began teaching activities at the soil-geographical faculty of Moscow University as an assistant to the department of geology. In 1940 he defended his thesis on "Paleogene deposits of the Middle Don Basin", in 1957 he defended his doctoral thesis on "Basic issues of regional stratigraphy of Paleogene deposits of the Russian Plate." Since 1960 - professor at the Department of Historical and Regional Geology, Geological Faculty of Moscow State University.
For many years, Leonov taught courses in general geology, structural geology, and geological mapping; taught a course in historical geology, created a school of stratigraphy . Among his students are V.P. Kazakov, G.A. Loginov , D.I. Panov , A.A. Voronin , A.S. Avanesyan and others.
He died on July 31, 1983 in Moscow. He was buried at the Rogozhsky cemetery . The seamount [2] [3] is named after him.
