George M. Cohan or George M. Cohen ( born George M. Cohan , full name George Michael Cohan, July 3, 1878 - November 5, 1942) is an American singer, composer and songwriter, producer. Most famous for his theatrical productions, mainly vaudeville. Among his most famous songs are Yankee Doodle Boy, Give My Regards to Broadway (both of his largely autobiographical musical Little Johnny Jones ; he wrote it himself, including music, and played the main role in it) and “ Over There ”, one of the most famous and inspiring songs of America during the First World War [4] .

About Cohan, in particular, two Broadway plays were staged [4] and the film Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) was filmed with James Cagney in the title role.

In 1970, George M. Cohan was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame [5] .
Name Pronunciation
According to Don Makeib’s book “Kagney,” George M. Cohan himself pronounced his name “George M. Cohan”, but at the very end of his life he began to say “Cohen” in solidarity with his Jewish friends (he was not of Jewish, but of Irish descent ) Most Americans said “Kohan” [6] .
