Biography

Miklos Zrinyi was born in 1508. It came from the ancient Slavic clan Shubich (Šubić), whose Upper Croatian branch has been called the Zrinsky counts since the 14th century .

With 1542 ban of Croatia and Slavonia , Zrinyi in 1563 was appointed commander in chief of the troops on the right bank of the Danube and commandant of Sigetvara . On August 6, 1566, Sultan Suleiman appeared with a large army under the walls of this fortress, in which Zrinyi with 2500 people settled.

On August 19, Zrinyi was forced to leave the city, which was put to fire, and with the remnants of his detachment, including 800 people, locked himself in the citadel. From August 26 to September 1, the Turks stormed the citadel several times daily, but to no avail. In vain did the Sultan of Zrigny incline to surrender, offering him viceriousness over all of Illyria and hereditary possession of Bosnia , in vain threatened him with the execution of his only son Georg, as if he had been captured by the Turks.

When the flames seized the top of the citadel on September 7, Zrinyi, at the head of his 600 soldiers, rushed into the thick ranks of the Turks and soon fell, struck by three bullets.

The heroic defense of Sighet served as the plot for many dramatic and musical works, for example, the opera Nikolai Zrinsky by I. Zayts , first staged in Zagreb in 1876.

Great-grandson of Zrinyi, also Miklos (Nikolai) ( 1620 - 1664 ), from 1647 ban of Croatia , won several victories over the Turks. A science lover and a poet himself, he left (in Hungarian ) idylls, songs and the epic Obsidio Szigétiana, singing the deeds of his ancestor. A collection of his poems was published in 1651 ( Vienna ), and prose works in 1817 (Pest); a magnificent edition of the complete collection of his works was published in Pest, in 1852 . The Zrinsky clan ceased in 1703 .
